Don Shipley’s Worst Day of BUD/S: Pt II

Teammates, Part II of Extreme SEAL Don Shipley’s worst day of BUD/S. Find out how the famous SEAL motto, “If you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying,” worked for Don and his classmates. Thanks again Chief! AMM

Part II: “Third Phase, we had them. It was a bold plan to cheat, one we were sure had never been thought of before. We were smart, and would never be caught.

Third Phase was OURS. The plan was simple. We’d only shoot half of the class weapons.

During the weapons phase at BUD/S on San Clemente Island, we’d clean weapons we shot until very late at night. Each morning the weapons were checked to see how well we cleaned them and there was a steady stream of trainees headed for the surf zone carrying their “Failed Weapon” to get wet and sandy.

Meticulous, is the only word to describe how clean they expected the weapons to be, so we devised a plan to get some extra sleep and clean fewer guns at the same time.

Broken down into squads, the Instructors would take one squad at a time for “Contact Drills’ where we’d simulate enemy contact and we’d practice how to get out of it by maneuvering. The rest of us sat and waited for our turn and plotted our next move.

As the first squad came back, and the next squad went out, we’d quickly switch weapons with the first squad. Try and follow the bold thinking…

Squad one now had clean weapons and squad three, who had not gone out yet, had the first squads dirty ones to shoot. When squad two came in with dirty weapons, they would switch them with squad fours clean ones. This would go on throughout the day and night, and at the end of the evolution, only half the class weapons were dirty, and the other half were clean, saving many hours of cleaning as we’d all pitch in and clean half the weapons.

It worked, and we laughed and joked while cleaning them. Having gotten over on the Instructors we became giddy with excitement, that we’d continue this throughout Third Phase and become the “Best Rested” class in BUD/S history.

The tent flaps opened a short time later and the Instructors entered. We finished cleaning the weapons in the dark, cold, Pacific Ocean that night because we forgot that they had gone through BUD/S as well.

Dam, we dum…

Back at the compound in San Diego, Third Phase was over except for one more O-Course. We’d graduate the next morning, no more runs, no more swims, just one more O-course and some paperwork that day and we were free men.

Each Phase in BUD/S the class is assigned a “Proctor.” Our Third Phase Proctor, as each Phase Proctors are, the closest thing to an Instructor friend you have. They take pride in how the class performs, they look out for you, they solve problems, there the first guys you go to when something is wrong.

Proctors are there to help. Proctors are also Instructors. Enough said… Our Third Phase Proctor was beloved by the class. A no-nonsense SEAL, he certainly helped me and the others get through training, and we learned much from him.

He gave us our final brief that morning concerning gear turn-in, and graduation. He congratulated us and said it was his pleasure to Proctor such a fine class and he appreciated all our hard work.  We were his last BUD/S Class, as he’d go back to a Team soon.

We were his best Class, and he shook each mans hand and offered a final Hooyaa for us and a secret that he would share as we did our final O-course.

He said that it was customary in BUD/S that on the final O-course the class was allowed to cheat. He said, “BUD/S is over, have fun one final time, you’ve completed the “Toughest Military Training in the World.”

We HOOYAA’D so loud I though the roof might lift off the building and we ran to the O-course.

On each O-course we ran, the Instructors for that phase stationed themselves at different obstacles throughout the course. Our final one would be no different. Being one of the fastest guys on the O-course, I started before most guys and blew past the hardest obstacles ignoring them and laughed and screamed, just as the guys in front and behind me were doing.

I’M A F**KIN SEAL…HOOYAA…  I’M A F**KIN SEAL…

Half way through, I began to notice the Instructors were not laughing with us as I’d run past them with a grin, giving them the “Thumbs Up” signaling we were all fellow SEALs now.

Turns out, our buddy the Proctor had duped us.

There is no custom in BUD/S that says you can cheat on the last O-course, but there is a custom that each Third Phase Proctor tells the Class there is!!!

Our last day in BUD/S, was our worst day in BUD/S.

One final lesson on “Nothing is Fair.”

When I arrived home that day, my wife remarked, “I’m glad you’re back, I had a feeling something terrible had happened to you today!”

I replied… “WELL, NO F**KIN SHIT …”

We were beaten SILLY, SILLY, STUPID, and graduated the next morning.”

25,000 Pushup Challenge: The difference was dedication

Teammates, not everyone who started the 25,000 Perfect Pushup Challenge made it to the finish line. I asked V/R EM3 OLESH, captain of Team Delta, what distinguished those who MIKE CHARLIE’D (Mission Complete) the challenge and those who did not. AMM

Roman said, “Well, to start off, the difference between people who finished and those who did not is dedication.  If you don’t have dedication, then you are most likely not going to be able to finish anything that you start. In some cases you may even not start anything at all.  But sometimes, even if you have dedication, there are other unforeseen events that take place and make you change your course or your destination.  In this case there were those that frowned on what we were doing and let it be known that if the other two didn’t stop, it would reflect badly on them. The push ups weren’t the problem but the place where we were doing them was.

Unlike the others, MM2 Jones and I were not affected by the decisions of those people and did our best and ultimately finished the challenge.  I guess what I am trying to say is that no matter what may stand in your way to reaching a goal, you should always find a way to finish it.  It was a great and fulfilling feeling when we finally did the 25,000th Perfect Pushup.  I know people do push ups every day but if any one out there can say that they did 25,000, I say “good job, keep it up.”

In conclusion, it has been a pleasure dealing with the Perfect Fitness team. I hope that people take a cue from us and start their own challenges. Be sure to finish them!

 Thank you

Training is Never Over

Telling it like it is, as always, here’s Marcus Colburn! Here’s a guy who’s knows that striving for perfection “is a work in progress, constant, like camouflage”.  HOOYAH Mojo Frog! AMM

“Teammates, ”‘HOOYAH – TRAINING’ IS NEVER OVER”. Check me out using my Perfect Pushups in combination with TRX gear at my gym. I have maintained my stretch through my workouts which is so important. Also, staying ready for anything through constantly striving for “PERFECT”ion is now a way of life instead of a diet or some change that I have decided to try for awhile — only to just give up & quit after not seeing the results that I expected immediately.

Yes, TEAM, it is a work in progress: constant, like camouflage. One has to strive for Heaven always but at least we can make it to the top of Mt. Everest!  We have to use all ways possible to reach the lofty goals of “PERFECTion”!

Repeat after me: HOOYAH, training is never over!”

Who’s IN? Six weeks to Perfect Abs!

The time has come – Who’s IN? Teammates, I’ve spent the last 8 years with my head down developing products and workout routines to help folks of all shapes, sizes and fitness levels to take control of their bodies potential. It’s time to take what we’ve learned to the next level and reach those who still question their own potential and natural born abilities – we need to offer these people more motivation to give them a little extra boost for them to take action.

It’s time to write a book

The  book we’re going to write is going to be a simple one – it’s going to focus on the waistline – turning adipose (fat) tissue into Awesome Abs, and we’re going to do it together. The three key elements are:

  1. Philosophy – Getting the mind right to take action
  2. Output and Input – Exercises and Nutrition
  3. Action Plans – Easy to follow workout and nutrition plans

The goal is to create a book that inspires and encourages people to take action and find success with their bodies – after all, once they find success with their bodies, they’ll find success throughout their lives. We’re going to help people feel and look better about themselves – one teammate at a time, and I can’t think of a  better team of people to help me, then all of you who have joined me over the years.

How can you help?

Submit your favorite ab exercises – I don’t care if they’re in a chair, on the floor, or in a boat with a goat!

  1. Submit your secrets/tips to succeeding with your body
  2. Submit your picture of your abs – waistline (as high definition as possible folks)
  3. Submit your full name so we can give you credit in the book!
  4. You know the drill: send email to getfit@perfectpushup.com

Why help us? Because folks that want to help us are those that have learned to succeed themselves and want to share the joy of their successes with others. There’s no greater gift than helping others help themselves!

I’m on a mission – who’s with me?

Find the Right Teammates!

Find the right teammates. Step Three of Mission TANGO ALPHA. No matter what mission SEALs go on, it’s always as a team, the size of the team is determined by the audacity of the objective – some missions require 32 SEALs some require only 2 SEALs, but you are ALWAYS more powerful with a team. No matter what your goal is, find the appropriate teammate to help you complete it, whether it’s losing 20 lbs or finding your dream job, you’ll be stacking the deck in your favor with teammates that can support you in your pursuit of achieving your goal. Example – it’s a fact, you’ll be more inclined to continue your workouts if someone else is depending on you to show up – not to mention, if you’ve never lost 20lbs before, don’t you think it would be helpful to learn from someone that has??

Are you willing to take the first step – that is, Take Action…TANGO ALPHA. You can talk all you want to yourself, friends and family about your big ideas, but until you Take Action, your words are just that – fleeting puffs of breath that are meaningless until backed up by Taking Action. The beauty is, you can do it! Taking Action starts with getting out a pen and paper, and deciding what objective you want to have in your life – then creating the plan on how to accomplish it…don’t know how to accomplish it?

Find a teammate that can tell you! Then you Take Action toward your goal EVERY DAY – each day you Take Action you’re building a new habit that will become a powerful new teammate that over time will help propel to new heights…but remember, habits don’t form overnight, they take time and repetition, so make sure you TAKE ACTION every day toward your goal!

Enjoy this summer, it’s what summer’s all about. Make it memorable not only for the fun and fellowship you’ll have with friends and family, but also for the TANGO ALPHA mission you’re making happen. After all, if you don’t do it – who will

Happy Summer Teammates – make it great!

It Takes a Team

Teammates, it takes a Team and Perfect Fitness has some of the best Teammates on the planet! AKO, I appreciate you fielding some questions from Jeff, a new Perfect user. Folks, stand by for AKO’s Warrior Workout — it’s coming next month and it’s intense! AMM

Jeff wrote in, “I have purchased one Perfect Pushup and one Perfect Pullup. The directions of the workout, says that it is a “2 MINUTES DRILL”.  Simple question: I do 20,12,8 on pushups. Do I have to do all those reps in 2 minutes max? Which will give me like 20 seconds max for rest each reps, or do I rest 2 minutes every rep? My other question, I was training with weights for triceps and biceps. Will doing the Perfect Pushup also train my triceps? Should I quit the weight training?  Does the Perfect Pullup training work my biceps? Will I still get ripped if I train only with the Perfect Pushups and Pullups for my arms?

AKO’s answer: The 2-minute drills call for each set of pushups or pullups to be done within 2 minutes.   As the chart says, good form for a Perfect Pushup or Perfect Pullup means that you go through the full motion of the exercise, taking one second on the downward movement, and one second on the upward movement.

This means that, if you tested at a Max of 30 pushups and 15 pullups, you would do 20, then 12, then 8 Regular Perfect Pushups per set within 2 minutes, and 15, then 10, then 5 Regular Perfect Pullups per set within 2 minutes.  (The numbers for the other exercises are listed on the workout charts, each set being conducted in the same manner.)

At 2 seconds per repetition (one second up, one second down), this would mean that it would take 80 seconds to complete the forty pushups you are doing in the pushup set, leaving you with 40 seconds of rest time between the 20-12-8.   Concomitantly, it would take you 60 seconds to complete the thirty pull-ups you are doing in the set, leaving you with 60 seconds to rest between the 15-10-5.

Now some of the exercises, like standing rows, and some of the Power 10 exercises, would cause you to go over the 2 minute time limit, but as long as you use proper form, proper timing, and don’t over-break, you will still be maximizing your workouts.

I hope this clears up any confusion.

Alden’s Perfect Principles: #9

9. To make your ability to persevere unstoppable, you must define and believe in the purpose of your actions.

Teammates, Andre Fredrick uses a mirror as a clear and present reminder of all that he has achieved — and why he believes in the purpose of his actions. He said, “All I have to do is look in the mirror to define and believe in the purpose of renewing and following through on those personal commitments every day.”

8. Your ability to persevere determines your ability to succeed.

Teammates, I’m giving Andre Fredrick the floor. He told me, “I have been working out every day for over a year, and I still have many mornings when the old Andre tries to talk me out of breaking out the Perfect Pushups. I know that I owe much of my success to persistence and perseverance.”

To what do you owe your success? The readers of CHARLIE MIKE are standing by for your insights!

25,000 Perfect Pushup Challenge

The 25,000 Perfect Pushup Challenge from: V/R EM3 OLESH, Team Delta members.

“We started to do pushups on 16th of May and have been doing them since, some more than others. At the top of the picture there is a name with a # next to it. That # as you may have guessed already means the # of push ups per rep and every tally mark below that equals to 20 push ups… Since it’s the month of June the # of push ups per rep increased to 30.

We also have a contract that we made up between the four of us. It pretty much states how many pushups we have to do each watch and some of consequences for not following them. The pushups we do are either normal, wide grip or close grip. I will keep you informed of how many pushups each one of us does every day.”
